Lakewood – The Chatfield Chargers (0-1), came out firing in Friday night’s season opener but
ultimately fell to Dakota Ridge Eagles (1-0), 23-12, in a physical, hard-fought battle.
The Chargers wasted no time getting on the board. Just 1:34 into the first quarter, quarterback
Cash Williams connected with Gage Greulich for a touchdown, giving Chatfield an early spark.
The offense struck again in the second quarter when Williams found Gage Lauer in the back of
the end zone at the 9:46 mark to put the Chargers up 12-0. But Dakota Ridge answered quickly
with back-to-back touchdowns before halftime, sending Chatfield into the locker room down
14-12.
After the break, momentum swung firmly toward Dakota Ridge. The Chargers’ offense struggled
to sustain drives with injuries to Lauer and Jack Kapity, while the defense was forced to stay on
the field for long stretches. Despite several key stops, Dakota Ridge took advantage of short
fields and extended its lead, keeping Chatfield off the scoreboard the rest of the game.
In the closing minutes, Dakota Ridge sealed the game with a sack of Williams in the end zone
for a safety, closing out the 23-12 win. Although it was a very tough loss for the Chargers, Ryder
Hoffschnieder and Kiowa Gocha provided a bright spot, keeping the energy high and showing
relentless effort with 5 total tackles and 2 tackles for a loss each—setting the tone with their
leadership and grit to limit the Eagles offense to 14 points.
Senior Captain Kiowa Gocha, called the game an important first step for a group still finding its
identity. “I feel like not only what I learned but what we learned as a unit is that this was a big
first for a lot of these guys,” he said. “Now we have an understanding for what it’s like to play
together under those lights. We have to put this behind us and use it as fuel for our next game.”
Head Coach Kris Rosholt praised his team’s effort despite the final score. “People thought that
because we lost 37 seniors last year we were going to be an easy team to beat, but these boys
fought till the very end and I couldn’t be prouder,” he said. Rosholt explained the team’s mindset
was simple: “Silence ‘em—silence the critics who think we can’t play to their standards because
we have a smaller team.” He added that the group’s biggest takeaways were mental toughness
and learning how to handle adversity—things he believes will carry them forward this season.
Despite the loss, Chatfield’s early offensive success and toughness showed plenty of promise.
With lessons learned, the Chargers will look to bounce back Thursday, September 4, when they
face Horizon.
